After all the names thrown around, this was the best we could do? I would've been fine for him as DBs coach again, but not sure about DC.
I personally think it's an immediate upgrade. The man can flat coach. All you need to do is to look at Emmanual Davis as a freshman versus as a senior. Kid regressed tremendously when Smith left. As for not having been a DC for 10 years, I would be willing to bet that he's forgotten more than alot know. On top of that the man WANTS to be here. That still carries alot of weight in my book!

Sadly, I think this probably is the best we can do. Certainly does not have the wow factor many wanted, but we got rid of BM so I guess we can't complain too much............yet.
"Life’s pretty good, and why wouldn’t it be? I’m a pirate, after all."
He's a good coach and he probably came within the same relative pay scale as Mitchell. Big payouts to coaches is not our thing
Well it fell in the middle in my opinion, not as bad as some of the rumored guys, not as good as shannon, but he actually has a track record of success, some of it here no less (something even Kaufman cant say) and again I believe its still an upgrade over the previous DC
Sounds like we tried for home run guys but settled for a single or double. Smith is a big upgrade over BM, but when you have names like Hud and Shannon tossed around Smith is a bit of a letdown.
Oh, me thinks you need to read up on RS.......He was the DC at Tulane in 1998 when they went 12-0.....he may not be the best, but he is a very solid hire. He was the DB/ assistant HC here with Skip.
Soccer is Cool!
I think many will be pleasantly surprised. "Wow" hires don't necessarily translate to W's. Smith is one of the most respected in the business for a reason. And from what I've heard from some of the former players (Travis Simmons, Brandon Simmons, Dekota Marshall), they are all AMPED UP about what the D will return to under his leadership.
Yes, Dekota Marshall is really pumped about the RS.
Shannon would have been great as for Hudson he used us for his own gain and that's OK very glad he chose Purdue.
Underwhelming hire? DISAGREE 100 PERCENT!
As mentioned on another thread, HE WANTS TO BE HERE! He had success when he WAS here previously! Let's all pull our heads out of the clouds and WELCOME him back!
Earlier today, I looked up his stats/tenure with us the first time around...not too shabby!
JULY 1st, 2014 cannot get here soon enough!
Agree CFO, RS' been a DC, developed many players into great DBs, great recruiter & position coach / Ast HC! Good hire, care more about the 'pow' factor than the 'wow' factor.GDP!!
Welcome back Coach Smith!!

Am i missing something. Where are people getting the "he wants to be here" stuff from?
He, along with Hud, was reported to have approached ECU for a possible return...if I remember the readings correctly.
Not sure I agree with this, it's not like we just settled on Mr. Smith looks like he was the third or fourth choice. We went after Hudson, Shannon, and Nix but it's still an up grade big time from ole BM
He returned to Greenville a while ago. He approached ECU about the return.

His son never left and stayed here even when his dad left for the job in Tampa (USF). Great guy - have worked out with him sometimes at Champion's in Winterville. Have also played golf with him. I think he works in IT at Vidant Hospital.
underwhelming if you were expecting Randy Shannon, maybe. but this is still an adequate hire and will make our defense 2x as good as it was under Mitchell.
His daughter is also still in Greenville... Actually went to school and took some classes with my girlfriend recently.

Tells it like it is, maybe some of our guys need to hear it.
Bulls defensive back Coach Rick Smith talks spring football. Coach like the depth at the position, but wants more toughness out of the unit.
The only reason I was even remotely pleased about the Hudson talk was that it presented an opportunity to bring back Rick Smith. He was the gem of the defensive staff under Holtz and it was obvious to anyone paying attention. The other was Donnie Thompson. Hudson was the front man for that band. As for Randy Shannon, he had Miami talent to work with all the time. Nix was a one good year and fade type guy. Kaufmann was probably the next best choice of the realistic ones, but his rep was to stay 2 years and go, plus he had that Chapel Hill stench on him. I love this hire.

Every single doubter who wants to paint RS as a feeble senior citizen unfit for duty needs to watch this video. The man is a coach, through and through. He's going to bring an element of swagger back to this defense, and will have Connors Men on his squad as opposed to Golden Boys. This is absolutely an upgrade, and maybe not sexy but it FITS with what we are trying to do. GDP
Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser"
Everyone praised Connors for coming back because he wanted to be here, but really have our athletes improved that much physically since he got here? I don't see much difference in our physicality or endurance that I didn't see when we were winning back to back titles.
I know Smith will be a major upgrade over Mitchell, but just because he was a good DBs coach and wants to be here, we can't pencil in automatic success as he takes over an entire defense. And are we going to be transitioning back to the 4-3? Seems like a lot of unknowns to me.
