Underwhelming hire

  • BadMojo said...

Every single doubter who wants to paint RS as a feeble senior citizen unfit for duty needs to watch this video. The man is a coach, through and through. He's going to bring an element of swagger back to this defense, and will have Connors Men on his squad as opposed to Golden Boys. This is absolutely an upgrade, and maybe not sexy but it FITS with what we are trying to do. GDP

Everyone praised Connors for coming back because he wanted to be here, but really have our athletes improved that much physically since he got here? I don't see much difference in our physicality or endurance that I didn't see when we were winning back to back titles.

I know Smith will be a major upgrade over Mitchell, but just because he was a good DBs coach and wants to be here, we can't pencil in automatic success as he takes over an entire defense. And are we going to be transitioning back to the 4-3? Seems like a lot of unknowns to me.

4:15, this is just the records broke during the winter work outs, over 20 have been broken since Connors returned, many were records that had stood since Connors left in 2000. But, it's not something that would always be seen on the field right away. Are they stronger or faster, yes. But, it's something that takes time to back to where we were when we had 8 seniors and a junior starting on the Defense in 2009.

That's good but players everywhere are getting stronger over time. Until I see the improvements on the field, I'll reserve praise. No excuses next year with a senior-laden team.

I thought our offensive line improved tremendously. Plus there were a lot fewer injuries this year on both sides of the ball. I have to think conditioning was a factor.

Didn't we fill up a whole wing at the hospital with football players under Holtz and Golden? It seems like we have had less overall injuries to the team since Connors has been back.

    Same answer: Family.

I also heard that Hudson wanted to be here... Only difference i see is no other schools that i know of were going after RS. Im not saying i think he will be bad, idk enough to make those judgments. I even like that video of him, hopefully he instills that "tough" mentality in our team. I just get tired of people trying to put a silver lining around every damn cloud.

  • Hudson used us (donnors, ex-players, administrators, & fishingcoaches) to further his own agenda and that's OK it's a business. Bottomline Hudson no more wanted to come back here than he wanted to reunite to Skip. Remember one thing coaches have NO allegiance to schools only themselve's and other coaches.

  • I was initially on board with thinking this was an "underwhelming hire" but then I realized I was just starstruck by Shannon and Hudson. Long, long ago when I was trying out for a walk on spot the main thing I remember about him is his intensity. I guess it's personal opinion but he will light you up on the field if he feels necessary. I remember him one time yelling at a receiver for dropping a ball becuase that meant his DBs weren't getting the tackling work that he wanted. Love that in a coach, only time will tell for sure but I like the potential of this hire.

  • Still have trouble grasping the concept of being "starstruck" by Greg Hudson. Don't get me wrong, he's got a decent history and reputation, but we are not talking about Bud freaking Foster here guys... HUD is not the be all-end all of DC candidates.

The only reason I was even remotely pleased about the Hudson talk was that it presented an opportunity to bring back Rick Smith. He was the gem of the defensive staff under Holtz and it was obvious to anyone paying attention. The other was Donnie Thompson. Hudson was the front man for that band. As for Randy Shannon, he had Miami talent to work with all the time. Nix was a one good year and fade type guy. Kaufmann was probably the next best choice of the realistic ones, but his rep was to stay 2 years and go, plus he had that Chapel Hill stench on him. I love this hire.

ultraviolet just spoke a parable! RS will be a major improvement.
